- Q: How should the passenger air bag module be serviced to prevent serious injury during accidental deployment on 2009 Lincoln MKX?A: Always service passenger air bag modules in the MKX by pointing the air bag together with its deployment door and trim cover and tear seam towards one direction from your body to protect yourself from accidental deployment hazards. Disabling the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) should occur before starting your work sequence. Begin by opening and lowering the glove compartment door then unhook it from the instrument panel before removing any equipped dampener material. The RH instrument panel finish panel requires removal through five retaining clip disengagement before the LH duct assembly bracket screw and both duct assemblies can be extracted from the glove compartment opening. You should remove 4 bolts securing the passenger air bag module support bracket alongside the 3 nuts from the passenger air bag module. Detach the three mounting studs by gently moving the module rearward. This will allow you to disconnect the seven hooks on the trim cover and place the module across the cross vehicle beam. A small screwdriver should unlock the locking buttons which secure both electrical connectors but avoid pulling from the buttons because it could result in damage to the components. Take out the passenger air bag module through the glove compartment opening. Install the module by placing it on the cross vehicle beam while releasing the electrical connector locking buttons and feed the 2 connectors into their places before securing the locking buttons. Place the module onto the three mounting studs then secure it with three nuts which should be tightened to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). Insert the bracket onto the cross vehicle beam then use 2 bolts tightened to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) torque specification before securing outboard and inboard support bracket bolts to the module using the same torque value. Put back the RH and LH duct assemblies as well as the LH duct assembly bracket screw. Reinstall the glove compartment door after securing its dampener while making sure the RH instrument panel finish panel clips are entirely installed. The SRS needs repowering to finalize the service procedure.
