2009 Lincoln MKZ Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the gearshift cables on 2009 Lincoln MKZ?
A: Begin repair or service of gearshift cables by removing first the heater core and evaporator core housing before removing the battery tray. Pull the spring clip out smoothly from the shift mechanism groove until it rotates to 90 degrees upward position. Disconnect the gearshift cables from their bracket by applying light force to the retaining part to prevent any structural damage. First separate the Restraints Control Module (RCM) by taking out the gearshift cable clamp along with the clamp nut. Place the insulation blanket to the side before removing the two gearshift cable nuts to separate cables from the floor but tighten them to 8 Nm (71 lb-in) when reinstalling. You should disconnect the cable from the shift lever assembly with careful execution to protect the retainers while drawing the shift cables through the bulkhead into the interior. Before moving the gearshift cables through the dash panel observe that the grommet arrow faces upward and follow the exact steps in reverse order after making any desired gearshift cable adjustments.
