2009 Lincoln MKZ Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable for Both 6-Speed and FNR5 Transaxles on 2009 Lincoln MKZ?
A: The first step for servicing and repairing the selector lever cable includes heater core and evaporator core housing removal then Restraints Control Module (RCM) removal before both the 6-speed and FNR5 transaxles. The selection lever cable service requires disconnecting the manual control lever cable end from the transaxle and freeing two tabs to extract the cable from its bracket in the 6-speed transaxle. The installation and removal of the selector lever cable end requires disconnecting it from the manual control lever and releasing two tabs to remove the cable from its bracket for both FNR5 and 6-speed transaxles. You should disconnect two wiring harness fasteners and place the RCM wiring harness to the side. Push aside the insulation blanket from the bulkhead to reach the two nuts on the selector lever cable bracket before removing both grommet nuts to pull the selector lever cable out through the inside of the vehicle. Install the two selector lever cable nuts after positioning the cable by tightening them to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Reinstall the RCM wiring harness with its fasteners after replacing the insulation blanket covering the grommet. Make sure both locking tabs are locked when installing the selector lever cable while inserting the cable end onto the ball stud before pressing the cable into the bracket until it clicks. Check the cable lock condition by pulling on it to confirm proper locking before checking that the cable end is correctly attached. As the last step install the selector lever cable end on the manual control lever then reinstall the battery and battery tray together with the RCM and heater core and evaporator core housing. Set the distance of the selector lever cable to an appropriate length.
