2009 Mercury Mountaineer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Rear Two-Piece Drive Shaft on a Four-Wheel Drive on 2009 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: A four-wheel drive vehicle needs to be hoisted in neutral position for driveshaft rear two-piece replacement work to begin. You should firstly remove the two center bearing bracket nuts and then secure the bracket at 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) torque when installing it again. Index-mark the CV joint to the transfer case output flange and the rear U-joint flange to the differential pinion flange. The CV flange bolts and washers become available but undamaged originals can be used after applying threadlock and sealer to the threads. After discarding the six CV joint bolts and three CV joint washers you should install new bolts that receive a torque of 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). The replacements of flange bolts can be reused with threadlock and sealer if the original ones appear undamaged. Competently put in four new flange bolts which should get tightened to 112 Nm (83 lb-ft). A proper tool must be used to pry at the specified area to separate the driveshaft flange from the differential pinion flange instead of using hammers on the components. Move the driveshaft towards the back of the vehicle while moving the front section across the vehicle frame crossmember before extraction. The installation process requires a reverse execution of the removal steps.
