The first step in troubleshooting the engine oil dip stick and dip stick tube consists of extracting the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet pipe. The left-hand (LH)
Exhaust Manifold needs removal as the initial step. The service procedure requires removing the nut, bolt and oil level indicator along with tube from vehicles having 4.6L engines and discarding both components with their O-ring seal. The oil level indicator together with its tube and bolt requires removal for 5.4L vehicles while the O-ring seal needs discarding. Check the oil indicator tube for signs of any harmful damage. When installing on vehicles with a 4.6L engine you need to lubricate a new O-ring seal using engine oil before installing the oil level indicator while using the bolt and nut for attachment with a torque of 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). When working on the 5.4L engine you should first lubricate a new O-ring seal before installing the oil level indicator and bolt then tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). After mounting the front oil level indicator on its tube support bracket you must secure the bracket nut to a torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Reinstallation begins by placing the LH exhaust manifold followed by installation of the ACL outlet pipe and the ACL.
