Service and repair of the timing cover starts with disconnecting the battery ground cable and removing the
Water Pump. The professional service begins with vehicle lift support and crankshaft pulley removal after disconnecting the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor wiring. Both bolts at the front of the
Oil Pan should be removed from the left and right positions before lowering the vehicle. Proceed with the removal of camshaft synchronizer then continue by taking off accessory drive belt idler pulley and accessory drive belt tensioner. The technician should remove the front cover gasket and front cover followed by taking out the crankshaft front oil seal together with the water pump mounting studs. To protect the front cover remove the hidden screw before sliding off the cover and gasket from the dowels. Throw away the gasket item. Cleaning gasket surfaces requires no fiber disk application while the oil pan needs shop towel packing and gasket surface examination. Install the engine front cover by first applying silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan block seam and then adding the front cover gasket together with another bead of sealant at the edge of the gasket. Incidentally, attach the engine front cover by sitting its lower rim on the oil pan edge while pushing the top over. The new water pump mounting studs must be installed with Loctite(R) pre-applied towards the inside of the engine. Several stages are required to properly tighten the engine front cover nuts and bolts. First tighten bolts 1-11 and 13 to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.) followed by bolt 12 to 25 Nm (89 inch lbs.) and finally add another 90° of angle for bolts 1-11 and 13. After fitting the accessory drive belt tensioner and idler pulley on the vehicle you must raise it again to install all necessary bolts. Begin by draining the engine oil while reconnecting wire connections to the Crankshaft Position (CMP) sensor and then installing the crankshaft front oil seal together with the crankshaft pulley. The procedure includes lower vehicle position followed by reinstalling the camshaft synchronizer with the water pump before reconnecting the battery ground cable to add new engine oil.
