The safety of your vehicle depends heavily on proper inspections followed by repairs to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) after any collision occurs. The SRS device becomes dangerous in a crash scenario when restraint system diagnostic tools exist in the vehicle during road testing therefore technicians must first remove these tools to prevent possible fatal injuries. All deployed devices including air bag modules and pretensioners need replacement with new units when accompanied by new impact sensors and a fresh restraints control module (RCM) after a deployment event or when RCM shows DTC B1231 (Event Threshold Exceeded). The vehicle service requires all necessary modules to receive a complete DTC reset after both the repair work and system tests. The passenger side floorpan should be examined for damage when DTC B1231 is stored in the occupant classification system module (OCSM) of vehicles equipped with an occupant classification sensor (OCS) system. Installation of new rails as part of the OCS system takes place for rail type systems while weight sensor bolt type systems require the installation of new seat tracks with OCS system weight sensor bolts. Perform an OCS system reset only after clearing the DTC from the OCSM. Bladder type OCS system demands inspections for damage followed by necessary repairs which may require usage of an OCS system service kit to replace defective components. The procedure also includes new hardware and mounting point installation if mounting point damages are observed on the impact sensor. The installation of a new
Clock Spring is necessary when the driver air bag module has deployed. When driver or front passenger safety pretensioners activate their belts the technicians must replace all safety equipment including retractors, buckles and height adjusters. A detailed inspection must be performed for vehicle damage especially focusing on the steering column in addition to instrument panel components and seats and safety belts and SRS wiring. The inspection completion requires replacement or repair of detected damaged components.
