Ford E-250 Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a TorqShift Shift Cable and Bracket on Ford E-250?
    A:
The first step of servicing the TorqShift shift cable and bracket starts with parking the vehicle in neutral position on a hoist. First unscrew the two screws together with the Data Link Connector (DLC) then expose the lower finish panel by pulling out the retaining clips until you can remove the steering column opening panel. First lower the steering column after removing all four cross car beam nuts then secure these nuts with 15 Nm (133 lb-in) torque when reinstalling them. Danger exists during repair of the shift cable that could damage this assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. The shift cable needs detachment from the shift tube lever before removing it from the steering column bracket by lifting the locking tab. You must disconnect the cable pushpin that secures the stud in the bulkhead before using the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable to pass through the bulkhead. Divide the transmission work by disconnecting the shift cable from the manual control lever, detaching the wire harness from the shift cable bracket and removing the bolts that secure the bracket. After completion place the cable and bracket elsewhere. Secure the bracket bolts at 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) during reinstallation before pressing the cable into the bracket until it clicks to secure the locking tabs. The completion of the inspection involves confirming the shift cable lock within the bracket by pulling on the cable. Then adjust the shift cable if needed.
