How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Shift Knob on Ford Escape?

The automatic transmission shifter requires service and repair which should start with positioning the vehicle on a hoist with transmission set to NEUTRAL and shift knob placed in the (D) position. To start the procedure use a pry tool to lift the upper shift knob trim ring before taking out the top finish panel. Once you remove the set screw you can detach the knob section including wiring by pulling them directly upwards. The shifter straw must be removed by extracting it in a straight up position. Installation requires minor application of multi-purpose grease on the new shifter straw which should then be pushed downward into the bore. Place the overdrive cancel switch electrical connector wire harness through the bezel opening before installing the knob with its set screw. Reinstall the top finish panel and upper shift knob trim ring while paying attention to the orientation of the thick tab on the driver side front of the shifter before fitting it into place. Several times shift between PARK and DRIVE positions while checking that the set screw does not produce excessive tightness.
