Ford Explorer Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on Ford Explorer?
A: Vehicle service and axle shaft repair begins with vehicle lifting and support followed by removing the wheel together with its attached tire. Secure the differential housing by removing its cover through bolt loosening and draining the lubricant from the rear axle housing. When all bolts are removed the technician can replace the differential housing cover and the rear Brake Disc. The operation of removing the differential pinion shaft requires extra attention because it could result in pinion gears escaping which might harm other components. To extract the differential pinion shaft begin by disconnecting its lock bolt and afterward removing the shaft. When you extract the U-washer through the axle shaft inboard you need to be watchful about not injuring the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove. The differential pinion shaft should be positioned back into place while using a lock bolt that remains finger-tight. When removing the axle shaft users should carefully protect the wheel bearing oil seal from damage. To install the wheel bearing oil seal grease the lip of the seal with Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C at equivalent specification ESA-M1C75-B. Double-check that the differential pinion shaft stays undamaged during the removal process. Lay the rubber O-ring on the U-washer groove free from damage before positioning the U-washer onto the axle shaft button end as you pull the shaft outward from the hub assembly. You can use Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or an equivalent that meets Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 to coat the threads of the unavailable new pinion shaft lock bolt. Install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt by placing the hole of the shaft into the bolt hole. Installation of the rear brake disc and differential housing cover should precede the lubricant filling process of the rear axle housing using specified lubricant type and quantity before wheel and tire reinstallation.
