The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) found in Ford Explorer vehicles is also important in the fuel management where the position of the throttle is checked back and forth to enable an efficient fuel air mixture for combustion. In the electronic throttle control systems, the TPS also aids to manage the location of the throttle while sensors like the Closed Throttle Position Sensor (CTPS) are used to justify when the throttle is at its shut state. In current TPS, sensors in Ford Explorers are Hall effect or magnetoresistive sensors that are more reliable and accurate than potentiometric sensors that are used in the earlier days. It is therefore paramount to note that driving efficiency and performance may drastically be affected if there is something wrong with the TPS; this therefore calls for early detection so that the TPS may be replaced so that the vehicle gets to accelerate smoothly.

Ford Explorer Throttle Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Throttle Position Sensor on Ford Explorer?
    A:
The service process for a Throttle Position (TP) Sensor begins from detaching both the Air Cleaner (ACL) outlet pipe and cutting attachment of the TP sensor electrical connector. Vehicles with 4.6L (3V) engines need the PCV hose dismantling from the heated PCV fitting before moving toward the heated PCV fitting electrical connector removal and two bolts securing the heated PCV fitting. Users must discard the heated PCV fitting O-ring seal during this process. Heat damage risks exist when the Electronic Throttle Body (ETB) temperature surpasses 120 °C (248°F) thus direct heat to the TP sensor and plastic components must be prevented. Place the suitable heat gun at a distance of 25.4 mm (1 in) to heat the ETB top while maintaining the top TP sensor bolt ear at 55°C (130°F) for three minutes or less. Check the ETB temperature using an infrared or digital temperature laser thermometer during heating. Already discard two components: the bolt away from heat first before proceeding with the other bolt and discarding the blocked TP sensor. Hand tools should be used to install the new TP sensor by tightening two new bolts to 3 Nm (27 lb-in). Users must install a new O-ring seal before securing the two bolts which fasten the heated PCV fitting for vehicles that operate with 4.6L (3V) engines. The next step includes reattaching both the heated PCV fitting electrical connector and the PCV hose to its corresponding fitting. Connect the electrical connector of the TP sensor before reattaching the ACL outlet pipe.
