Ford F-150 Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the brake shoes on Ford F-150?
A: The Brake Drum removal process enables inspection of the rear brake assembly for Wheel Cylinder leakage while checking brake shoe and lining contamination and backing plate or rivet minimum thickness and spring discoloration and adjusting lever brake adjuster screw fitment. Make note of the positions where the short and long brake shoe retracting springs are located for installation purposes. After that substitute the long and short brake shoe retracting springs. Begin by unscrewing the brake shoe adjusting lever cable from the brake shoe adjusting lever followed by removal of the cable guide then the adjusting lever return spring and finally extracting the brake shoe adjusting lever along with its spring before discarding the brake adjuster screw assembly. The parking brake link spring together with the brake parking spring retainer detach from the parking brake strut so remove the brake shoe anchor pin guide plate, parking brake strut and parking brake lever pin retainer prior to removing the rear brake shoes and linings by releasing the brake shoe hold-down springs and hold-down spring pins. You should disconnect the parking brake lever using a pulling motion on the parking brake cable spring. For installation, compress the parking brake cable spring and attach the parking brake lever, then clean and lubricate the Brake Backing Plate using Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or an equivalent silicone compound meeting Ford specification ESE-MlC171-A. Attach the parking brake lever to the rear brake shoe and lining, securing it with the parking brake lever pin retainer, and install the rear brake shoes and linings by positioning them and installing the brake shoe hold-down spring pins and springs. Proceed to install the parking brake strut together with the link spring and spring retainer then add the brake shoe anchor pin guide plate. Start by installing the short brake shoe retracting spring with the brake shoe adjusting lever cable in position over the anchor pin while the crimped side faces inward and then proceed with installing the long brake shoe retracting spring which must have its cable inside the cable guide groove. To build the brake adjuster screw assembly start by adding silicone compound then put in the brake adjuster screw into the brake shoe adjusting screw nut while freeing it one half revolution before installing the brake shoe adjusting screw socket. The brake adjuster screw assembly goes into position along with the brake shoe adjusting screw spring and brake shoe adjusting lever cable and adjusting lever return spring then the brake shoe adjusting lever gets attached through the cable hook. Operation of the automatic self-adjuster can be tested by pulling the brake shoe adjusting lever cable while inspecting both brake shoe adjuster assembly rotation and proper adjustment of the screw nut when releasing the lever. Complete the process by readjusting the brakes and putting back the brake drum.
