Ford F-350 Super Duty Universal Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the driveshaft universal joint with a single Cardan and flange yoke on Ford F-350 Super Duty?
A: The servicing procedure for this type of driveshaft universal joint with one Cardan single yoke and one flange yoke begins with safe placement of the component on a workbench while avoiding vise clamping which could damage the driveshaft. The components should receive index-marking treatment for maintaining driveline stability. Start the procedure by removing and discarding all snap rings while positioning the Screw Installer/Remover and C-Frame in a vise. Pliers will help in bearing cup removal when specific techniques are needed. The C-Frame procedure requires the operator to first place the flange inside then press out a bearing cup before rotating the flange by 180 degrees to press in the spider for removal of the final bearing cup before removing the flange. Complete the process by cleaning the driveshaft yoke section when all bearing cups along with spider components have been removed from the driveshaft. At final assembly time install the Universal Joint Kits by using complete assemblies that unite all kit components together. Mount a new bearing cup inside the yoke of the driveshaft while placing the needle bearings in their correct position before installing the new spider. Apply the C-Frame tool at the snap ring groove level to press the bearing cup and perform the same task for the other side. Users must inspect the flange before installing new bearing cups and flange by putting an fresh bearing cup into the flange with verification of the needle bearings position. Position the flange on the spider and utilize the C-Frame to apply pressure on the bearing cup located below the snap ring groove for both sides of the assembly. The assembly process requires yellow snap rings from the provided kit although black snap rings can serve as proper alternatives when needed. Secure all snap rings on the C-Frame by using the tools provided to prevent striking the bearings. The final inspection of the U-joint should check its smooth movement while using a brass or plastic hammer to strike the yoke in case it shows signs of binding.
