- Q: How to service and repair the lower control arm on Ford Freestyle?A: The procedure for fixing the lower control arm begins with measuring from the hub center to fender lip when the vehicle rests on level ground. Position the vehicle on a hoist when it is set to NEUTRAL position. The Trailing Arm-to-knuckle bolt must be removed first before installation when you should tighten it to a torque value of 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). It is necessary to release the trailing arm-to-subframe bolt to allow free movement of the arm which should then be re-tightened at 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.). Disable the wheel speed sensor harness from the toe link before indexing and loosening the toe link-to-subframe nut to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) during reinstallation. The toe link-to-wheel knuckle bolt should be discarded and the link must swing down freely before installation with a torque of 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.). The four stabilizer bar bracket-to-subframe bolts of 2WD vehicles need replacement while the installation torque needs to be 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). The knuckle-to-lower arm bolt needs removal followed by bolt discard then tightening it to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.) when installing 2WD or to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) when installing models with AWD. When you install the Shock Absorber assembly with spring and lower arm bolt treat it to torque of 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.) for 2WD and 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.) for AWD systems. Wear new bolts to fasten the lower arm-to-subframe link because installation torque needs to be 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.) for 2WD and 133 Nm (98 ft. lbs.) for AWD. The technician needs to use a jack stand to elevate the rear suspension until the measured distance matches the original measurement between the hub center and fender lip before installing new suspension fasteners and tightening lower arm bolts. After completing the reinstallment check the rear toe settings if needed.
