Safety glasses must be worn at all times when you service the side air bag module to protect against accidental deployment injuries. Keep the live side air bag module with its air bag and tear seam turned opposite from your body while still facing in the correct direction. Do not drop the module directly onto the cover tear seam. A shower with soap and water will wash away sodium hydroxide from skin surfaces which might trigger irritation effects. Probing the connectors on the air bag module will lead to module deployment and possible injuries to your person. Besides replacing the damaged air bag covers on side air bag modules installers should never use memory saver devices to minimize injury risks. When a side air bag deploys you need to replace both the side air bag module and bolt before checking the replacement requirements for the side air bag module bracket on the seat back frame. Service providers must disable SRS power before starting any work that involves SRS components installed on seats. The warning lamp turns on when removing the RCM fuse while the ignition switch is turned ON but it does not point to any SRS system failure. Testing should prove the SRS to be operational with no faults before you return the vehicle to the customer. The repair procedure requires replacement of new components before assessing the issue again with reinstallation of original parts. Depowering the system allows removal access to the side air bag module by first detaching its bolt cover and writing down the locator hook position in its bracket. After removing the bolt you can raise the side air bag module upward from the seat back. When you install the bolt apply a torque of 10 Nm which equals to 89 lb-in. First disconnect the electrical connector by opening the locking clip using a small hook. Then eliminate the tab. Before installation check for foreign objects on all mounting areas. Replace the side air bag module when the air bag cover shows separation or exposes the material. Repower the system after performing the reverse steps to complete installation.
