How can the piston ring set end gaps be checked and corrected before installation on 2000-2011 Ford Ranger?

Even before fitting new piston rings the end gaps should be measured, provided that it has been assumed that piston ring side clearance has been set right. Cast a number of piston/connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets on the bench, taking the same piston and cylinder during the end gap measurement and engine assembly. Place the top ring into the first cylinder with bottom of the piston, make sure that the top ring is parallel with side walls of the cylinder. For determining the end gap, insert slip feeler gauges between the ends of the ring until a feeler of the corresponding width is shimmed on the ring ends; the feeler should require slight force to pass through. If the gap is either larger or smaller than that required then check the rings again before continuing. If the gap is too small, it has to be adjusted to a slightly larger size to avoid contact of the ring ends during operation of the engine which is dangerous. This can be done filing the ring ends from the outside in using a fine file mounted on a vise. A substantial end gap isn't a problem unless it measures greater than 0.040-inch; order the correct rings for the engine. Repeat the procedure for each ring in the first cylinder and the remaining one, to maintain the relationship between the ring, piston, and cylinder. After ensuring that the ring end gaps are still in their correct sizes, fit the rings onto the pistons as follows: the oil control ring is made up of three rings. Insert the spacer/expander into the groove and, if it has an anti-rotation tang, fit it into the drilled hole. To avoid damage, do not use a piston ring installation tool when installing the lower side rail; do the same for the upper side rail. After installing all the three oil ring components, ensure that the two side rails can move freely in the groove. After that, place the middle ring with the identification mark up and with the aid of a piston ring installation tool, place the middle ring in the middle groove without expanding on it. Last, put the top ring in just as this one was, and make sure the mark is on the upside as well, though it can easily be confused with a middle one. Follow the same for the other pistons and rings that you have with you.

Even before fitting new piston rings the end gaps should be measured, provided that it has been assumed that piston ring side clearance has been set right. Cast a number of piston/connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets on the bench, taking the same piston and cylinder during the end gap measurement and engine assembly. Place the top ring into the first cylinder with bottom of the piston, make sure that the top ring is parallel with side walls of the cylinder. For determining the end gap, insert slip feeler gauges between the ends of the ring until a feeler of the corresponding width is shimmed on the ring ends; the feeler should require slight force to pass through. If the gap is either larger or smaller than that required then check the rings again before continuing. If the gap is too small, it has to be adjusted to a slightly larger size to avoid contact of the ring ends during operation of the engine which is dangerous. This can be done filing the ring ends from the outside in using a fine file mounted on a vise. A substantial end gap isn't a problem unless it measures greater than 0.040-inch; order the correct rings for the engine. Repeat the procedure for each ring in the first cylinder and the remaining one, to maintain the relationship between the ring, piston, and cylinder. After ensuring that the ring end gaps are still in their correct sizes, fit the rings onto the pistons as follows: the oil control ring is made up of three rings. Insert the spacer/expander into the groove and, if it has an anti-rotation tang, fit it into the drilled hole.
