Ford Taurus Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter on Ford Taurus?
A: Start the repair process of the automatic transmission fluid filter by first securing the transaxle range selector lever in PARK position and also engaging the parking brake. Start the engine to visually check transmission fluid quantity and quality while examining its condition. Then turn the engine off before disconnecting the battery ground wire. The service requires you to use a hoist to lift the vehicle then remove the lower retaining clip installed on the lower transaxle cooler line fitting. The plastic insert retainer's tabs should be depressed in order to take out the cooler line from its fitting. A 0.9 mm (3.0 ft.) long flexible hose needs to be dependently connected to the fluid cooler tube before guiding its open end towards a proper 15-quart waste container. The internal transaxle seal will remain undamaged by inserting a soft material plug into the cooler tube fitting. Lower the vehicle after stopping the steady fluid flow from the transaxle while keeping engine rpm within curb idle speed to prevent transaxle damage. Let the engine reach idle speed then wait for 40-60 seconds with flexible hose observation until the fluid stream ends while draining 1.9 to 2.8 liter transmission fluid (2-3 quarts). You should add 9.5 liters (10 quarts) of Motorcraft MERCON (R) Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or an equivalent fluid that meets MERCON (R) V specification to the transaxle. Stop the engine when the transmission fluid flow stops by checking the rpm against curb idle speed to drain 9.5 liters (10 quarts) of fluid. During transmission fluid replacement raise the vehicle then unplug the cooler tube fitting before unfastening the flex hose from the tube and perform cleaning to guarantee leak prevention through a proper installation on the cooler tube fitting. After installation of the lower retaining clip with the lower cooler tube proceed to drop the vehicle. Introduce Motorcraft MERCON (R) V Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-5-QM or its equivalent meeting MERCON V requirements to the transaxle up to 1.9 liters (2 quarts). Next start the engine while moving the transaxle range selector lever to let the transaxle properly engage during each range. At normal operating temperature you should check the transaxle fluid which must exist inside the crosshatched area of the fluid level indicator. (suffix fluid amount to .2365 liters (.5 pints) until it reaches the correct level). Reconnect the ground cable to the battery as the last step.
