A live driver air bag module needs to be handled with its deployment door orientation facing away from the body while keeping it pointed in the opposite direction from your body to minimize potential serious injuries in case of deployment during service. The electrical connectors of air bag modules Safety Canopy(R) and side air curtain modules must never be probed since probing actions may unintentionally deploy the modules and endanger lives or cause severe injuries. Painting air bag module deployment doors or trim covers leads to incorrect air bag deployment behavior. Therefore painters should avoid such applications. Vehicle release must wait until the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) passes full operational tests without detecting any faults. Depower the SRS before removing the three screws that fasten the steering column cover along with the lower steering column shroud which detaches from the upper shroud. The vehicle requires a two-screw removal from the instrument cluster finish panel before prying it forward to disconnect any integrated in-vehicle temperature sensor assembly. Adjust the steering column to full extent while removing the instrument cluster finish panel along with upper steering column shroud functioning as a single unit. The driver must position the
Steering Wheel at the 12 o'clock mark for access to driver air bag module wire clips before lifting the module from the steering wheel by separating the wire clips from their attachment pins. The two retaining tabs on each module need to be pressed to disconnect their electrical connectors. The installation requires proper positioning of the steering wheel wire clips while making adjustments if any clips are not in their correct position. Steer the steering wheel controls wires away from points where the driver air bag module attaches to prevent wire pinching during the installation procedure. Pass the driver air bag module connectors to each other before mounting the module onto the steering wheel with all wire clips properly set into position. Check the attachment with assistance from a mirror before testing proper installation by gently pulling each corner of the module. The instrument cluster finish panel should be reinstalled while also connecting any in-vehicle temperature sensor assembly which is present. Secure two screws that join the instrument cluster finish panel with the lower steering column shroud and steering column cover by using three additional screws. After repowering the SRS test the horn by pressing each corner of the driver air bag module while verifying its operation before investigating horn defects in case it fails.
