- Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the passenger air bag module on Lincoln Zephyr?A: However, protective eye safety glasses are mandatory when handling the passenger air bag module to avoid accidental injury during deployment. The air bag module must be handled such that the air bag and deployment door face away from your body and it must never rest with its deployment door aimed downwards. Sodium hydroxide residue should be washed out from your hands with soapy water following deployment completion. You should never probe the connectors on the air bag module to stop accidental deployment because you should discard air bag modules with discolored or damaged deployment doors and never attempt to repaint them. Remove the restraints control module (RCM) fuse with the ignition switch ON as this behavior is standard even though there exists no fault. All procedures should begin by turning off system power then accessing the glove compartment followed by releasing both dampener cables and lowering the door. Start by removing the instrument panel end panel followed by the five right-hand instrument panel trim panel nuts which need to be accessed through the glove compartment opening. To remove the right-hand trim panel pull it out until all clips detach before extracting it. Previous step gets rid of the two bolts which anchor the passenger air bag module by using the glove compartment opening. Use caution to untie the deployment door clips before you take out the passenger air bag module while keeping away from the deployment door edges. Apply a small screwdriver to lift and release the locking buttons of electrical connectors while taking care to avoid extracting them from their placement with the buttons to prevent harm. The electrical connection process requires a user to free the locking buttons prior to connector coupling because each component functions as a specific key to match the corresponding keyway on the passenger air bag module. Take the electrical connectors to their full insertion point then press down the locking buttons. When installing the module keep away from its deployment door edges while making sure all placement hooks fit inside the instrument panel correctly. Reattach the right-hand trim panel after setting five nuts followed by end panel installation and rescuing the dampener cable while closing the glove compartment last before powering up the system. Continue by tightening the two bolts on the passenger air bag module to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
