How to remove and replace the camshaft safely on Mercury Grand Marquis?

The first step to carry out camshaft replacement involves turning off the fire suppression system because turning the system on could lead to serious personal injury. When working on this task you should place the vehicle on a hoist and keep the gears set to NEUTRAL. Avoid rotating the crankshaft or camshaft whenever timing chains are detached and cylinder heads are installed due to serious risks of damaging valves and pistons. Start with rolling follower removal of the camshaft followed by timing chain extraction. The bolt along with the camshaft sprocket and spacer need removal before uninstalling the 13 camshaft bearing cap bolts and camshaft bearing cap ladders from the assembly. The camshaft needs removal from its position inside the cylinder head as the last step. Before camshaft installation onto the cylinder head you must apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals and bearing cap ladders. Begin by placing the camshaft bearing caps on the cylinder head and loosely bolt them first before torquing them to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) according to a specific order. Install the camshaft sprocket along with its bolt in two stages starting with 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) torque followed by an extra 1/4 turn (90 degrees). Install newly placed timing chains on top of the roller followers. The fire suppression system requires repowering if present and owners must follow safety warnings as well as standard procedures to avoid dangerous personal injury.
