Mercury Milan Brake Pads Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair front brake pads on Mercury Milan?
A: A clean operating fluid identical to manufacturer specifications must be used for front brake pad service and maintenance while preventing the reuse of previously drained fluid to avoid damage. Installing brake shoes and pads from new on both ends of an axle prevents the creation of uneven braking conditions. The brake master cylinder reservoir fluid should be checked for level and fluid should be drained until it reaches 1/2 full. Take off the wheel followed by the tire then detach the Brake Caliper carefully with two guide pin bolts removal while supporting it with mechanic's wire to protect the brake hose from damage. The two brake pad retraction springs receive removal before you take off the brake pads and pad shim and stainless steel shim components for inspection of any wear or contamination. Uninstall the brake pad slides together with their four brake pad slide clips. Start by installing the four brake pad slide clips before protecting the piston and boots while using a C-clamp with a worn brake to push the caliper piston into its place. Screw the brake pad slides into their correct positions and apply the provided grease to the pad backing plate as well as the shims according to instructions while aligning the cut shim section on the inboard pad. Begin by putting brake pad shims followed by stainless steel shims before adding the two brake pad retraction springs. Seat guide pin boots properly onto their anchor plate position before mounting the brake caliper and tighten guide pin bolts to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft). The procedure requires filling the brake master cylinder reservoir with clean specified brake fluid followed by reinstallation of wheel and tire and multiple brake applications to check correct functioning.
