Mercury Milan Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Crankshaft Seal on Mercury Milan?
    A:
Begin the crankshaft rear seal servicing operations only after the vehicle sits in neutral on a hoist. Empty engine oil before installing the drain plug which should be tightened to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). To protect the rear oil seal retainer joint from damage the 16 bolts and stud bolt along with Oil Pan must be taken off. You must disconnect the 6 bolts and remove the crankshaft rear oil seal together with its retainer plate. Affect installation requires using the crankshaft rear main oil seal installer to mount the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate onto the crankshaft along with correct bolt torques to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). The use of metal scrapers along with abrasive tools should be prohibited for sealing surface cleaning operations since plastic scraping tools should be used instead. The mating surfaces of the oil pan alongside the engine front cover and cylinder block need thorough cleaning before inspection. After applying sealant to the oil pan it should be secured within 4 minutes or else the operator must remove the sealant followed by cleaning and drying the surface area for at least 4 minutes using metal surface prep. Depose 2.5 mm (0.09 in) of silicone gasket and sealant onto the oil pan before installing the oil pan and securing its 2 bolts lightly. First install the 3 bolts and stud bolt before tightening them to 10 Nm (89 lb-in), then proceed with tightening the remaining oil pan bolts in sequence to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). The flexible part and mechanical wheel should be reinstalled and the power unit should receive appropriate clean engine lubrication.
