- Q: How to service and repair the battery cables on Mercury Mountaineer?A: The process of battery cable servicing starts with disconnecting the battery while placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position and hoisting it. You should first remove the protective cap from the starter solenoid before removing its wire cable terminal nut. The nut needs tightening to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) before reinstallation. The starter solenoid positive cable terminal requires nut removal before installation where you should tighten it to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft). After disconnecting both the starter solenoid wire cable terminal and the starter solenoid positive cable terminal, remove the ground cable terminal nut with a torque of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) onto which a comparable value should be applied during reinstallation. Remove the electrical connector of the power steering pressure switch and A/C compressor while also disconnecting the oil pressure sending unit electrical connector. Disconnect the battery cable engine front cover bracket before positioning it aside and fasten it with a torque of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) during reinstallation. The battery cable frame bracket needs to be removed from its position along with the nut then tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) during assembly. Remove the two generator electrical connectors after releasing the battery cable harness locators from the front engine location. After setting aside the protective cover you must remove the nut which enables access to set aside the generator B+ terminal before tightening the connection to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Tear back the generator harness guide to access the BJB cover and detach its two nuts before reinstalling them tightly at 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Next disconnect the BJB terminal while removing the nut so position the battery cable body ground terminal aside before tightening it to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). The technician must first detach the two battery cable harness locators from the Battery Tray before disconnecting the battery cable harness electrical connector and then removing the battery cables. The installation should be performed by following the reverse steps of removal.
