The Steering Knuckle is one of the critical parts that distinguish reliability and performance of the Mercury Mountaineer automobiles which were manufactured from 1996 to 2010. This important part links the wheels to the vehicle framework, making provision for fastening of control arms and tie rod ends to allow for vertical motions occasioned by road surface in addition to side ways movements during steering. The Steering Knuckle fits numerous Mountaineer models; it can be rear wheel drive and all wheel drive and thus it is flexible between the numerous generations of this mid size, luxury sport utility vehicle. Its design has slowly moved from the old kingpin location to the contemporary orientation, thus improving driving efficiency and safety. As a part of the suspension and steering, or more precisely the suspension's front side on the Mercury Mountaineer, the steering knuckle require regular inspection and eventual maintenance. However, the Steering Knuckle can be prominently noted to be of higher standards in construction when compared to other automobiles of the same class in the market, since it can support extreme terrains and weather conditions that affect driving which adds a great value to the handling systems. Other features on the Steering Knuckle include: stability and control; performance; safety of the people in the car; and, quality all of which make the Steering Knuckle critical in the production and history of Mercury Mountaineer.

Mercury Mountaineer Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on Mercury Mountaineer?
    A:
The first step to maintain the steering knuckle includes removing the wheel and tire before discarding the halfshaft nut and installing a new version which needs tightening at 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). The Front Wheel Hub Remover will help you disconnect the outboard CV joint from the wheel hub. The brake hose must be kept free from contact by both the caliper and anchor plate; remove the bolts while using mechanic's wire to suspend the assembly before replacing old bolts with new ones and tightening them to 165 Nm (122 lb-ft). The replacement process requires uninstalling the Brake Disc then the wheel speed sensor harness bracket bolt while installing the new one with a 8 Nm (71 lb-in) torque setting. The next step involves removal of wheel speed sensor harness pin-type retainers together with its electrical connector. Replace the existing tie-rod end nut by installing a new piece that you will tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). Apply the C-Frame along with a Screw to split the tie rod from the wheel knuckle instead of hammering it to stop any damage. The operation requires replacement of the lower ball joint nut with a new one followed by tightening it to reach 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). The lower ball joint removal should be done using a 2-Jaw Puller device which prevents damage to the wheel knuckle component. Use a new upper ball joint nut which should have a torque setting of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). The C-Frame with Screw tool enables wheel knuckle upper ball joint separation before the knuckle can be removed. The completion of the installation requires the execution of reverse installation steps followed by a test for proper front end alignment.
