Service of the fuel level sensor must begin with safety precautions such as preventing smoking and using open flames and personal electronic devices close to fuel components because these areas contain flammable mixtures. You must first drain fuel system pressure while disconnecting the ground cable from the battery. Rotate the fuel tank filler cap in the counterclockwise direction only a quarter turn then place it safely aside. The Fuel Draining Hose removal must involve slow hose movement to stop fitting detachment while proper funnel placement inside the fuel tank filler pipe until the fitting activates safety valve operation. The Fuel Storage Tanker needs attachment to the Fuel Draining Hose for fuel removal until the sensor mounting flange reaches a position below the fuel level. Afterward, the fuel level sensor access cover can be accessed by removing three screws which must be torqued to 2 Nm (18 lb-in) following reinstallation. The sensor requires you to disconnect its electrical connector then put absorbent pads under work area and release the lock tab to rotate counterclockwise until you lift it out. Carefully handle the fuel level sensor to prevent damage to its float arm while inspecting the sensor flange and O-ring contact areas of the mating surfaces; bendage or corrosion or scratches require replacement of the sensor or fuel tank. Always replace the O-ring seal and apply clean engine oil to it before the installation process. Reverse all removal steps by placing the locking tab of the fuel level sensor in its correct position.

The fuel pump module electrical connector and the fuel tube-to-fuel pump module quick connect coupling.

Attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the Fuel Draining Hose to remove approximately one-eighth of a tank of fuel, lowering the fuel level below the fuel pump module mounting flange.

Remove the rear seat lower cushion and then the screws securing the fuel pump module access cover, depending on whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the battery ground cable.
