The first step for servicing the flywheel ring gear requires flywheel removal. A measured and even tap of the flywheel ring gear will keep it from binding as you remove it from the flywheel. A properly maintained acetylene torch should evenly heat the flywheel ring gear before inserting a brass drift to remove it from the flywheel. A qualified operator who uses proper acetylene equipment should perform the installation procedure while handling the hot ring gear with asbestos gloves or tongs. The heating process should stop at 278°C (500°F) and heat indicating crayons should be used for temperature monitoring during which the torch must stay in constant motion to prevent hot spots. Install the flywheel ring gear by placing its beveled edge toward the back of the flywheel so that you can drive it into place with a brass drift before adding the flywheel components back.

You must monitor the flywheel ring gear temperature using heat indicating crayons to prevent heating it above 278° C (500° F) due to damage risks to the flywheel. A brass drift should be used to remove the flywheel ring gear after heating it evenly because tapping the gear equally prevents binding. During installation, maintain the flywheel ring gear temperature under the specified range by constantly moving the torch to prevent hot spot damage across the components. Reinstall the flywheel ring gear by placing its bevel in the rear position through application of a brass drift tool before putting back the flywheel. All hot components require handling with tongs or wearing welding gloves accompanied by safety goggles to prevent personal injuries.
