Shift Knob

Begin by using an appropriate tool to take off the shift knob trim ring of the MKX. Proceed to detach the center console trim cover by using an appropriate tool after raising the armrest. Begin servicing the MKX shift knob by disconnecting the transmission control (TC) switch electrical connector then proceed to gently pry off the shift knob trim covers from the bottom front corners followed by the top front corner. Check the knob body for damage and perform a replacement when needed. Disassemble the shift knob by removing its two screws after which you can remove the knob itself while fleeing the TC switch electrical connector harness through the shift knob. Begin by inserting the TC switch electrical connector harness through the shift knob before installing both new screws that must first be loosely tightened to 2 Nm (18 lb-in). The new shift knob trim covers must be installed after verifying that the shift knob bezel sits properly on its mounting position. Running the TC switch electrical connector wires should be done at the back of the light bulb wires inside the shift knob bezel. After typing the TC switch electrical connector attach the center console trim cover. The installation of the shift knob trim ring completes the procedure for the MKX model.

A complete process for servicing and repairing the shift knob on vehicles with 6R75 or 6HP26 transmission starts with removing the PRNDL trim together with console tray and cup holder insert. The maintenance begins with unscrewing the component that anchors the console upper trim. Start at the bottom front of the right-hand (RH) shift knob cover before moving up to the top front for discarding. A similar procedure must be completed for removing the left-hand shift knob cover. Check for the LH and RH knob body towers along with their condition before discarding the LH shift knob screw. First disconnect the electrical connection of the transmission control (TC) switch then remove the shift knob. Begin installation by linking the TC switch electrical connector followed by attaching the shift knob and then inserting new LH shift knob screw and new RH shift knob screw. When installing the knob covers for the shift knob on vehicles with wood trim along with the rubber damper you will need new covers for the LH and RH sides. To complete the installation reinstall the console upper trim followed by a screw before putting on the PRNDL trim and console tray and cup holder insert.

The procedure for repairing a shift knob in Expedition and Navigator requires removing the PRNDL trim followed by the console tray then the cup holder insert. First, secure the upper trim of the console area with one screw. Start at the bottom of the front side of the right-hand (RH) shift knob cover and move it up to the top front section. Then discard it. The left-hand (LH) shift knob cover requires the same procedure of removal with disposal. Check that the LH and RH knob body towers exist undamaged before discarding both the LH and RH shift knob screws. The Tow/Haul switch electrical connector needs removal before you can take out the shift knob. First, connect the Tow/Haul switch electrical connector then install the shift knob and finally fix a new LH shift knob screw with a torque setting of 2 Nm (18 lb-in). Fit a new RH shift knob screw before tightening it to 2 Nm (18 lb-in). The rubber damper on wood-trimmed vehicles requires the installation of a new LH shift knob cover and a new RH shift knob cover. Reinstall the console upper trim while adding its screw and complete the installation by placing the PRNDL trim along with the console tray and cup holder insert.

It includes a rubber damper not found on other trim levels; install new LH and RH selector lever knob covers accordingly.
