2001 Ford Expedition Spindle Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to properly service and repair the spindle on 2001 Ford Expedition?
A: The spindle service process begins with power shut-off to air suspension through kicking off the RH switch in the panel to avoid sudden air spring changes that might cause vehicle position shifts during work. Start by lifting and securing the vehicle and then take off the tire assembly together with the wheel before removing the brake disc shield. A High-Lift Jack should support the lower arm before removing its upper ball joint castle nut along with the discarding of the cotter pin before continuing with the nut removal. A Pitman Arm Puller allows users to detach the ball joint from the front wheel spindle before they remove the upper shock absorber nut and washer and finally take off the front shock absorber through lower nuts. Proceed by taking out the tie-rod castle nut then discard the cotter pin before loosening the nut, and reapply the Pitman Arm Puller to free the tie-rod end from the front wheel spindle. Fold the front coil spring with a Coil Spring Compressor tool before removing the lower ball joint castle nut while also discarding the cotter pin so you can detach the castle nut. Use a Pitman Arm Puller to disconnect and separate both the lower ball joint while ending the procedure by taking off the front wheel spindle. New cotter pins must be installed during assembly while following the reverse steps of removal and checking the front end alignment before final installation.
