2001 Ford Explorer Water Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2001 Ford Explorer?
A: The water pump repair process starts with removing the fan shroud while draining all fluid from the cooling system. Start by rotating the tensioner pulley clockwise before taking off the belt which powers the accessory drive system. Disconnect the water heater hose from the water pump after freeing its clamp then remove the water bypass hose by loosening its clamps. Beginning with the removal of retaining nuts users should put away engine control sensor wiring before unscrewing bolts supporting both the water pump pulley and the water pump itself from the engine front cover. The author removes the water pump by first loosening its inlet hose clamp. The installation process requires cleaning the gasket areas on the water pump and engine front cover by using Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or a solution of equivalent quality to Ford specification WSE-MSB392-A while employing a plastic or wooden scraper. Under this step attach the water pump inlet hose while placing the water pump in position before bolting it into place. Reposition the engine control sensor wiring before securing it with the two nuts then install the water pump pulley. Connect the water heater clamp before joining the water bypass tube and its two retaining clamps. The tensioner requires clockwise rotation to install the accessory drive belt which later needs final tightening. The last step includes reattaching the fan shroud after filling the cooling system while you start the engine to inspect for leakages.
