- Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2005 Ford Escape?A: A service or repair of the oil pan begins with placing the vehicle on a hoist in neutral while draining engine oil before tightening the drain plug to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs). Begin by untucking the oil level indicator tube then remove lower engine front cover bolts followed by oil pan-to-bell housing bolts and ending with the 13 bolts securing the oil pan. From the start of oil pan installation maintain the use of non-metallic scrapers and non-abrasive tools because they could produce scratches which generate leaks. A plastic scraper tool should be used instead. Apply the sealant to the oil pan only when it will seal within 4 minutes. Any delay requires removing the sealant then cleaning the surface with metal surface cleaner before full drying occurs. After applying a 0.09 inch (2.5 mm) silicone gasket and sealant bead to the oil pan malted surface install the oil pan before using finger pressure on the 2 rear oil pan bolts to secure it. Begin installation of the 4 oil pan-to-bell housing bolts while tightening them to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Then fasten the 4 lower engine front cover bolts but limit their torque to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). To complete the procedure install the rest of the oil pan bolts while following the specific torquing sequence of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Reinsert the oil level indicator and its tube then add fresh clean engine oil.
