A block of wood should be inserted between the caliper bridge and pistons when using low air pressure at the fluid port to release the pistons against the wooden block. You can eliminate the block from your work then remove caliper pistons and discard the piston seals together with boots. Honing the cylinder bores should be avoided because the market does not provide pistons designed for honed bores. A rear disc brake caliper requires new piston seals while the replacement of the entire brake caliper becomes necessary when the cylinder bores show extensive scuffing or corrosion. New replacement piston seals and dust boots should be used along with fresh brake fluid which has not been left opened too long during the assembly process. The assembly process requires DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid to serve as a lubricant for dust boots with caliper pistons and piston seals as well as cylinder bores. When installing dust boots and piston seals avoid letting the piston seal break loose or sustain damage when you put the caliper pistons in place. Complete the installation by pressing caliper pistons into cylinder bore while performing the installation of the rear disc brake caliper.
