2005 Ford Explorer Transmission Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan on 2005 Ford Explorer?
A: A vehicle lifting and suspension procedure must be followed before placing a drain pan underneath the transmission fluid pan. Proper service requires removal of the drain plug for fluid drainage. Remove the drain plug to drain the fluid. A transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable after appropriate cleaning and damage inspection because it did not suffer any damage. You need to uninstall 16 transmission fluid pan screws followed by removal of the fluid pan and gasket. This procedure requires removal of the transmission fluid filter before cleaning and inspecting the transmission fluid pan together with its magnetic component. Clean automatic transmission fluid should be used to lubricate the fluid filter seals before installation to ensure proper positioning of the filter on the unit. Secure the transmission fluid filter to 10 Nm after properly positioning the gasket section. First place the fluid pan magnet into the transmission fluid pan followed by applying the fluid pan gasket onto the pan. Tightly fasten the transmission fluid pan screws using a crisscross pattern before torquing them to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). The last step includes installing the fluid drain plug while tightening it to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.) followed by partial transmission fluid addition.
