2005 Ford Mustang Air Bag Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the air bag control module and ensuring proper operation of the restraints control module (RCM) on 2005 Ford Mustang?
A: Service technicians must use safety glasses before working on the air bag control module due to the deployment hazard. The way restraints control module (RCM) faces defines the operation of supplemental restraint system (SRS). Vehicle owners need to check the RCM mounting and bracket for distortion following a crash which hurt the center tunnel area before they decide whether to change the RCM no matter what the air bags did during the impact. Using memory saver devices represents a risk for personal injuries so operators should avoid their use. Electronic modules have a high sensitivity to static electric fields that may result in system damage. Use the proper RCM unit during installation to stop the production of inaccurate diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). An SRS fault is not indicated when the RCM fuse removal triggers the air bag warning lamp to illuminate with the ignition on. This condition is normal. A vehicle cannot be handed over to customers unless all SRS systems operate without faults. The repair process entails substituting a new component until the issue stays unresolved where we must reorganize the original part followed by running the diagnostic test once again. The RCM removal process starts with system depowering and includes console shifter bezel removal together with the two center console top finish panel screws. After taking away both kick panels you can access the six screws holding the finish panel. The main task involves disconnecting electrical connectors followed by removing the center instrument panel finish panel. Pull out the connector after pivoting back the connector position assurance lever while breaking the thumb tab on the large RCM electrical connector. The small RCM electrical connector needs disconnection as you remove the three nuts that secure the RCM. Put the RCM into place before fastening and tightening its nuts to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). Connect the small RCM electrical connector using the procedure but allow the large connector position assurance lever to be completely free before proceeding with connection. Do not force the large RCM electrical wiring connector when installing it to prevent both poor wiring connections and damage to components. Light pressure should be applied to the connector before sealing it through complete activation of the lever. Secure the large RCM electrical wiring connector by verifying that the thumb tab is already engaged and locked. Connect electrical connectors while installing the center instrument panel finish panel using its six screws along with the reinstallation of driver and passenger center console kick panels. To complete the setup you must install the center console top finish panel along with its two screws and the console shifter bezel and finally turn on the system power.
