2005 Lincoln Navigator Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable and Bracket for a Column Shift on 2005 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The repair process of the shift cable and bracket for column shift vehicles starts by taking out the instrument panel lower finish panel. Do not handle the transmission shift cable assembly directly between the steering column transmission shift lever arm and steering column bracket because it could generate cable damage. Disconnect the transmission shift cable first from the steering column until finally from the transmission shift lever arm and its support. Use your fingers to raise the two locking tabs for cable removal from the steering column bracket. The cable retaining screw needs removal before pushing the rubber grommet along with the transmission shift cable through the floor panel. Set the vehicle transmission to NEUTRAL mode before placing it on a hoist in position. For the safety of the transmission shift cable avoid applying any force between the manual control lever and transmission shift cable bracket. Separate the transmission shift cable from its connection to the manual control lever while using gentle force behind the transmission shift cable lock tab to free it from the bracket. The transmission requires removal of its shift cable bracket by bolt elimination and subsequent re-tightening of bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) torque value. You should extract the cable out of the transmission bell housing cable route assist clip. Finish the installation by following the removal steps in reverse and place the cable inside the exhaust contact prevention clip before possibly readjusting the shift cable according to needs.
