2006 Ford E-250 Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag System on 2006 Ford E-250?
A: Before depowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) you must wear safety glasses to defend against injuries that could occur from accidental air bag releases. Probing the air bag module connectors should be avoided since it might activate the air bag system. The use of memory saver devices should be avoided because they could lead to personal injury. Before disconnecting electricity from any connectors you must first confirm proper floor pan placement of the restraints control module (RCM) and bracket assembly to prevent damages from occurring. Before working on any seat containing SRS components customers must disable the SRS system. A continuous illumination of the air bag warning lamp signals normal functionality when the RCM fuse 20 (10A) is removed with the ignition turned ON. Before starting the procedure turn off every accessory along with the ignition system. First extract the RCM fuse 20 from the central junction box (CJB) after removing its cover. View the air bag indicator during ON engine operation while it should remain illuminated continuously for 30 seconds. Check the fuse if there is no illumination. You must first shut off the ignition followed by removing the battery ground cable along with disconnecting all auxiliary batteries required for the current model. The minimum wait time must be one minute to deplete back up power storage. When repowering the vehicle make sure to eliminate every diagnostic tool used for the restraint system from the vehicle. Reattach fuse 20 to the CJB then place its cover back. After this sequence turn the ignition to ON. Check for any obstruction of air bag modules and ensure there are no people inside the vehicle before grounding the battery. Proceed with testing the SRS by cycling the ignition from ON to OFF while waiting 10 seconds and returning the ignition to ON position. The air bag indicator should illuminate for six seconds and afterwards disappear. The RCM requires about 30 seconds to perform a self-test when a fault is detected through an unlighted or continually lit or flashing air bag indicator. The yellow SIR warning light function becomes inoperative because of existing faults so the system plays a five-beep sequence to alert the driver about needing diagnosis and repair of the air bag indicator system and SRS faults. A diagnostic tool should be used to erase all continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present in the RCM.
