2006 Ford E-250 Battery Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the battery cables mounted on the frame on 2006 Ford E-250?
A: The process of servicing battery cables attached to the frame starts with disconnecting the battery followed by battery removal from the car. The next step requires removal of the upper right battery tray bolt followed by loosening the remaining three bolts until torque reaches 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Reinstall these bolts with this specified torque value. The battery tray can be unplugged from its bolts when you move it upwards while shifting it toward the right. It will then settle on the safety straps. When reinstalling the battery tray cover you should secure the two bolts at 7 Nm (62 lb-in). The battery terminal nuts can be stretched until the cables disconnect before re-tightening them to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Apply a torque of 14 Nm (10 lb-ft) when putting back the bolt which connects the frame-mounted battery harness to frame retainer. Dismantle the eight harness locators from the frame rail followed by the starter solenoid terminal cover then the starting solenoid positive cable nut before reinstallation that requires 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) torque setting. When reinstalling the starter solenoid wire terminal it should be tightened to 5 Nm (44 lb-in). Follow these steps to remove the nut for the battery ground cable terminal by tightening it to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft) and then remove the nut for the battery cable lower bracket to be tightened at 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) for 4.6L engines and 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) or 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) for 5.4L and 6.8L engines built before/after September 2005 respectively. Follow this order to separate the transmission cooler line clip from the battery cable lower bracket, then pull off the harness locator from the frame and take out the nut for the battery ground cable eyelet before tightening it to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). When reconnecting the generator cable and BJB terminals use a torque of 9 Nm (80 lb-in). You should finish the installation by reversing all steps of battery cable removal.
