2006 Ford Explorer Brake Pedal Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake pedal assembly on 2006 Ford Explorer?
A: Service and repair of the brake pedal assembly should start by setting adjustable pedals to the full forward position if present while depowering the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The brake pedal needs an at-rest connection to the booster rod for protection when working on the stoplamp switch and speed control deactivator switch. The technician should first remove the stoplamp switch then proceed to the speed control deactivator switch removal. The booster push rod clevis requires one-time use of a locking pin which can be removed from its position by pressing on the locking tabs for release and casting it away while putting a fresh one in for installation. Withdraw the brake booster rod from the brake pedal installation space where it will stay on the ground. The electrical connector for adjustable pedal motors should be disconnected on units with this equipment along with disconnecting the accelerator pedal motor electrical connector when present. Take out the two bolts from the brake pedal bracket followed by removing and discarding the four nuts securing the brake booster. Move the brake master cylinder and brake booster assembly forward to expose the studs while you unscrew the three acceleration pedal bracket nuts followed by the two screws that maintain the steering column opening cover panel. Secure the wheel to stop its turning then extract the steering shaft bolt and split the steering shafts before proceeding to remove the brake pedal assembly out of the vehicle. The brake master cylinder along with the brake booster assembly should be aligned with the brake pedal bracket assembly before installing the brake pedal assembly into the vehicle. You must install four new brake booster nuts which must be tightened to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.) and two brake pedal bracket bolts which should be set at 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.) and the three accelerator pedal bracket nuts which should achieve 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.). Connect both electrical connectors from adjustable pedal motor and accelerator pedal if originally installed. Fasten the new booster push rod clevis locking pin after you position it to the brake pedal. Secure the steering shafts before you place the pinch bolt. Tighten it until it reaches 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). The steering column opening cover needs to be remounted while the two screws keep it secure. The brake pedal must be properly positioned to the brake booster rod during rest time before switching on the stoplamp and speed control deactivator circuits to prevent component harm. The supplemental restraint system must receive its power source first.
