2006 Mercury Mountaineer Air Bag Control Module Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken When Servicing the Air Bag Control Module on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The service of Restraints Control Module (RCM) requires safety glasses to lower risks of accidental air bag activation. The RCM safety canopy has the potential to deploy when the device is connected to the original mounting position while the ignition remains active so refrain from holding or moving it. The vehicle requires a new RCM if it suffered damage to the center tunnel area during an accident and it must receive complete repair to its original mounting state regardless of air bag conditions. The mounting bracket and wiring pigtail of SRS components must be checked for damage following collisions to warrant new SRS component installation. A proper operation requires RCM retaining nuts to be tightened to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) but the use of memory saver devices should be avoided to protect personal safety. Static electricity poses a threat to electronic modules because they remain sensitive to these electrical charges. The RCM fuse removal during the ignition ON state makes the air bag warning lamp turn on while this normal condition shows no fault indication. The SRS system must be completely functional before returning the vehicle to the customer as well as checking the installed RCM to prevent false DTCs from triggering. The removal procedure for RCM begins with system power disconnection followed by floor console removal then disconnecting of the large RCM electrical connector by pressing the thumb tab and pivoting the position assurance lever back before pulling out the connector. The small RCM electrical connector requires loosening of the locking tab to disconnect before removing the three RCM nuts and removing the RCM. Install the RCM by first repositioning it according to procedure followed by securement of its three nuts then cable connection starting with the small electrical connector then assessing large connector alignment before final attachment. Press the remote connector until you hear a distinctive click followed by securing it with the position assurance lever. Reinstall the floor console before you turn power back on to the system.
