2006 Mercury Mountaineer Control Arm Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the upper control arm on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Service operations on the upper control arm start by performing a measurement from the hub center to the fender lip when the vehicle stands on level ground. After placing the vehicle on neutral in a hoist position you need to gradually lift up the suspension when distance measurements reach the initial marker. First remove the upper arm outboard nut along with its bolt and discard them. The inboard flag nut exists only for adjusting camber but should be discarded in favor of a non-flag nut for camber modifications. First remove the upper arm inboard bolt and flag nut before extracting the upper arm part. The upper arm requires a precise arm placement followed by the installation of a new inboard bolt having a non-flag nut which needs to be tightened to 250 Nm (185 ft. lbs.). The upper arm outboard bolt installation requires placement of the bolt head to face forward to safeguard wheels and subsequent installation of new outboard bolt and nut with 275 Nm (203 ft. lbs.) torque. Lower the suspension until completion then remove the jack to perform a rear end alignment check before making required adjustments for alignment.
