2006 Mercury Mountaineer Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Properly Service and Install a Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: To begin servicing the shock absorber and spring unit measure the center hub distance to fender edge while the vehicle sits level on static ground at curb height. The three shock absorber upper mount nuts must be taken off before installation but should be tightened to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) at the curb height position. The procedure starts with NEUTRAL driving gear while the vehicle rests on a hoist with a suitable jack providing support to the lower control arm at its lower ball joint position. The stabilizer bar link assembly requires removal of its nut along with grommet. Replace the link assembly before tightening the nut to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.) at curb height. Take out the shock absorber lower bolt and flag nut while discarding both pieces and proceeding to remove the shock and spring assembly. The technician must install the lower shock bolt by torquing it to 350 Nm (259 ft. lbs,) while keeping the vehicle at curb height. Complete all suspension bushing fastener tightening after elevating the suspension so that the initial fender-lip hub-center distance remains equal to the initial measurements. End the installation process by doing a reverse procedure.
