2006 Mercury Mountaineer Sway Bar Link Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear sway bar link on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Start sway bar and link service work by performing a level and static vehicle measurement from the hub center to fender lip. Install the vehicle on a hoist with neutral gear engaged. Both outboard upper arm bolts need to face forward so the wheel remains protected before you discard the outboard hardware and install the new bolts at 275 Nm torque to curb height. You must remove the sway bar link components such as nut, grommet, stud, and link assembly before discarding the nut and grommet while tightening the new link assembly to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) at curb height position. For installation, insert new nuts to a tightness of 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) after eliminating and discarding the four sway bar bracket nuts. First, detach the sway bar brackets and follow by the bushings and lastly remove the four bracket studs. Guide the front bracket studs down and slide them toward the rear of the vehicle while moving the back bracket studs toward the front. Before proceeding, disconnect the fuel vapor line from the fuel tank then set it aside using clips and worms. Carry out the sway bar installation and removal process on vehicles with rear air conditioners or heating units with high regard for the A/C lines and rear heater hoses to prevent any form of damage or malfunction. The left-hand side sway bar needs assistance to be taken off the vehicle. The sway bar link nuts should be tightened after suspending the vehicle on a jack until the center hub reaches the original resting point of the fender to measurement. Install by reversing all steps of the removal process.
