- Q: How to service and repair the Steering Shaft on 2007 Ford E-150?A: Proper servicing and repairing of the steering column shaft requires first positioning the steering wheel at straight ahead while switching off the ignition to protect the Clock Spring from damage. The procedure requires removal of the steering column shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt for all vehicles except commercial chassis to enable disconnecting the steering column shaft from the steering gear where subsequent reinstallation must be tightened to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). The next step should be to detach the dash panel seal of the steering column shaft from the dash panel. Then use a wrench to remove the coupler bolt linking the lower steering column shaft to the coupler. The shaft needs compression before tightening the coupler bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) during installation. Commercial chassis installation requires the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt to reach a torque of 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) before reinstallation then the steering column shaft must be disconnected from the steering column by removing its steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt and finally removing the steering column shaft which needs a torque of 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) for installation.
