• Q: How to service and repair the rear lower control arm on 2007 Ford Taurus?

  A: Before working on the rear lower control arm you need to take two measurements while the vehicle rests in a level position. First remove the hub cap and note the distance between hub center and fender edge. Set the vehicle in NEUTRAL position and mount it onto a hoist. Detach the parking brake braking bolt first and then pull out the braking unit along with the rear anti-lock brake cable and sensor connections if they exist. After disconnecting the lower control arm-to-spindle nut you can take out its washer and flag bolt before detaching the control arm from the spindle to dispose of those parts. Take out the front lower control arm by first discarding the lower control arm-to-body nut and flag bolt items and then removing the front control arm and adjusting cam from the vehicle. Before taking out the rear lower control arm you must discard both the lower control arm-to-body nut and flag bolt. Lower control arms go in with the offset pointing up and the BOTTOM marking on their bottom surface. Installation requires the rear control arm flanges facing forward while the front control arms point toward the vehicle's rear. Set the rear lower control arm in position then bolt on a fresh flag bolt plus replace the new lower control arm-to-body nut yet do not fasten it yet. Install the front lower control arm combined with adjusting cam against their new flag bolt and control arm-to-body nut adding them to the assembly but without tightening connections. Place the adjusting cam in its central alignment with the notch pointed toward 6 o'clock. Install the control arm while placing its new components including flag bolt, washer, and lower control arm-to-spindle nut. Place a jack stand underneath the suspension and lift it up until the measurement from the hub center to fender lip matches the beginning numbers. Use 80 Nm torque force to tighten first the lower control arm-to-spindle nut and then the lower control arm-to-body nut. Place the suspension in its lowest position then take off the jack stand. Connect the parking brake components after you install the parking brake cable bracket bolt and the sensor wiring harness when present. End your work by inspecting the tire position and make needed toe adjustments.
