2008 Ford E-250 Vapor Canister Parts Q&A

  • Q: How Should the Vapor Canister Be Serviced to Ensure Safety and Proper Installation on 2008 Ford E-250?
A: The safety protocol for servicing the evaporative emission system requires disconnecting the battery ground cable to protect against vaporous fuel explosive hazards. Keep all open flames and smoking materials at least a safe distance from components that contain fuel in them. The EVAP canister of the midship fuel tank operates in the same manner as the aft-of-axle fuel tank EVAP canister but might employ a vapor hose instead of a vent solenoid. Position your vehicle into neutral while hoisted and take out its spare tire shortly after. Start by disconnecting the fuel vapor vent hose followed by the fuel vapor tube-to-evap canister quick connect coupling and then both the evap canister vent solenoid electrical connector and harness retainer. Install the heat shield bolt by tightening it to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) at the van/wagon vehicle reinstallation. The next step requires removing lower evap canister and bracket assembly bolts and heat shield bolts which need tightness set to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft) during reinstallation. All vehicles need to remove the evap canister and bracket assembly bolts but van/wagon models already completed this step when taking off lower assembly bolts. The technician must separate the evap canister by disconnecting the evap canister-to-hydrocarbon filter canister tube quick connect coupling while removing it from the bracket. The installation requires application of clean engine oil to O-ring seals followed by the reverse order of disassembly. Leak testing of the evaporative emission system should take place after installation followed by execution of the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle.
