2008 Lincoln Navigator Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Shifter Mechanism on 2008 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The process starts with stripping down the lowest panels of the instrument panel and the steering column lower shroud requires removal of its attached screws. The service begins with lifting off the steering column upper shroud along with the IP cluster-to-shroud trim. The first step is to remove the IP cluster trim screws from both the right-hand side and left-hand side before gently extracting the trim piece from the IP. The IP cluster trim removal should be preceded by disconnecting both the in-vehicle temperature sensor connector and the dimmer switch electrical connector only when these components apply. Unscrew the upper IP cluster screws and both RH and LH lower IP cluster screws and set the IP cluster to the side. When disconnecting the selector lever cable you must keep away from the force zone between the steering column selector lever arm and steering column bracket to protect the selector lever cable assembly. Remove the locking pin along with the park lock cable (PLC) by keeping the locking pin for disposal and unplugging the PLC. The transmission control (TC) switch electrical connector along with the harness must be detached from their retaining clips. Next remove the selector lever bolt before taking out the selector lever itself. The selector lever mechanism requires removal of its lower bolt before disconnecting the brake shift interlock actuator (BSIA) electrical connector and subsequent removal of upper bolts to extract the mechanism. Complete the removal of the BSIA from the selector lever mechanism through this process: first pull the BSIA override button then remove the BSIA screw and after that gently pry the clip up. First apply the BSIA onto the selector lever mechanism by pulling the BSIA override button then lining up the selector lever tab with the BSIA before fastening the clip and putting in the screw. The next step requires installation of the selector lever mechanism inside the vehicle using upper bolts and connection of the BSIA electrical connector to 6 Nm (53 lb-inch). The installation of the selector lever mechanism lower bolt requires a torque of 6 Nm (53 lb-inch) before moving onto the selector lever tightening that reaches 18 Nm (13 lb-ft). The installation process includes connecting the TC switch electrical connector together with the harness to the retaining clips. Afterward install the locking pin and the PLC by linking the PLC and putting in a new locking pin. When attaching the selector lever cable keep away from any cable assembly force application. Fasten the IP cluster screws starting with the LH and RH lower set followed by the upper screws. After restoring the IP cluster trim connect the dimmer switch electrical connector and reunite only the in-vehicle temperature sensor connector if installed. To finalize installation secure the LH and RH IP cluster trim screws along with the IP cluster-to-shroud trim, the steering column upper shroud followed by the steering column lower shroud screws before installing the instrument panel lower finish panel.
