2008 Lincoln Navigator Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable and bracket for a column shift on 2008 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The repair and servicing work on column shift shift cable and bracket should start with a hoisted vehicle in NEUTRAL gear. You should first disconnect the instrument panel lower finish panel and hood release cable lever along with instrument panel lower reinforcement panel and steering column lower shroud by unscrewing them. Connectors must detach from the steering column along four steps where participants first separate the shift lever arm ball stud then lift the locking tab to detach from the steering column bracket before removing the shift cable retainer. Guide the rubber grommet along with the shift cable through the front dash and also remove the heat shield if present. Remove the shift cable from the manual control lever by elevating the locking tab first before separating the shift cable clip and bracket bolts from the transmission. Install these bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) when mounting the new bracket. The shift cable locking tabs must stay locked while the cable end needs to snap onto the ball stud with both an audible sound and manual pullback confirmation of its position. Place a fresh heat shield before you pull the shift cable through the dash panel with its rubber grommet. Then attach the retainer part to link the steering column bracket with the shift lever arm ball stud to produce an audible click and verify the attachment. Reinstall the steering column lower shroud together with the instrument panel lower reinforcement panel (torque to 9 Nm or 80 lb-inch) then the hood release cable lever (torque to 9 Nm or 80 lb-inch) and the instrument panel lower finish panel. Lastly, adjust the shift cable.
