2009 Ford Expedition Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the LH camshaft on 2009 Ford Expedition?
A: The first step to remove and replace the LH camshaft is to position the crankshaft damper spoke at 12 o'clock and the timing mark indentation at the 1 o'clock position. Remove the LH valve cover. The technician first loosens and backs off the LH camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt one complete revolution before disconnecting and removing the LH Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector along with the sensor itself. The needed placement of No. 5 cylinder camshaft lobe on exhaust stroke may need another complete crankshaft keyway rotation until reaching 12 o'clock. Follow these steps to eliminate the three designated camshaft roller followers but mark their starting positions first to protect the engine installation. A Valve Spring Compressor should be used to separate followers without allowing valve keepers to dislodge. After rotating the crankshaft clockwise you should position the damper spoke at 6 o'clock with the timing mark at 7 o'clock keeping in mind that further clockwise rotation is restricted at 6 o'clock. Screw the Timing Chain Locking Tool square to the engine block while it also maintains contact with the timing chain so the assembly process can proceed with it staying secure. First remove the front thrust camshaft bearing cap through straight upward movement then proceed to the specified sequence for removing the remaining bearing caps. Inspection of LH camshaft bearing caps reveals that their oil metering grooves need to be free of any debris found during cleaning. The technician should remove the camshaft phaser and sprocket assembly before discarding its bolt and washer and extracting the camshaft for replacement. The camshaft phaser should be checked for damage prior to applying engine oil on the new camshaft along with its journals and performing the installation. Set the timing chain correctly on the camshaft phaser and sprocket by following their scribed marks then install the camshaft phaser and sprocket assembly onto the camshaft with a new bolt that is tightened only by hand force. Fasten the five bearing caps onto their original places while using clean engine oil to lubricate them before tightening the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) according to the specified sequence. Use the crankshaft to make one counterclockwise rotation while assessing that the camshaft maintains its proper position. After using the Valve Spring Compressor to install the three camshaft roller followers the CMP sensor and bolt should be added and tightened to 10 Nm. The CMP electrical connector gets connected while the dual-stage procedure secures the camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt beginning at 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) then proceeding to a 90-degree rotation. The LH valve cover should be installed as the last step.
