The first step for steering column shaft servicing and repair requires hoisting the vehicle with NEUTRAL transmission. The Hunter(R) 28-75-1 holding device or an equivalent product should maintain a straight-ahead position for the steering wheel. During intermediate shaft removal you need to stop the steering column shaft from any movement because this action could damage the Clock Spring although rotation requires Clock Spring realignment. Unglue the upper steering column shaft from the steering column by taking out the bolt then discard it before installing a new bolt which requires a torque setting of 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Separate the upper steering column shaft from the lower steering column shaft now that you have removed its bolt to discarding it before installing a new bolt and tightening it to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). The installation requires tightening the new components to 12 Nm (106 lb-in) after removing the two bolts, the dash seal and upper steering column shaft. The lower steering column shaft needs its steering gear bolt replaced and discarded before installation with a new bolt creating 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) torque. Steering column shaft bolts must always be replaced with new ones because their reuse will cause fastener failure and dangerous loss of steering control for vehicle occupants.
