2009 Ford F-150 Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2009 Ford F-150?
A: Before servicing the Clock Spring assembly you must depower the SRS system through a sequence which activates the air bag warning indicator when the specific Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is removed during the ON state of ignition. A fully operational SRS with no faults should be confirmed before handing back the vehicle to the customer. Start by removing the driver air bag module after which you must remove the steering wheel before taking off the steering column opening trim panel with its three screws removed. The technician should remove upper and lower steering column shrouds followed by detaching the power tilt switch electrical connector if present while unclipping the lower shroud from the upper. The selector lever boot needs to be set aside during installation. Detach the Clock Spring electrical connection while removing the two screws which anchor the Clock Spring. When installing a new Clock Spring the anti-rotation key should stay in place until the steering wheel is installed because premature removal might damage the Clock Spring when it is not correctly centered. Fasten the Clock Spring into position with the two screws while reattaching its electrical connector. Screw the lower steering column shroud back into place using three fasteners then reconnection of the power tilt unit if present and install the upper part. Affix the steering column opening trim panel through three screws. The Clock Spring needs proper centralization for extended lifespan so a complete centralization process should be done when uncertainty exists. Caution should be exercised when rotating the inner rotor of the Clock Spring to stop damaging the internal ribbon wire. The installation of the steering wheel should begin only after completing steps when replacing or installing a new Clock Spring and removing the anti-rotation key. You should rotationally move the Clock Spring inner rotor counterclockwise until you begin to encounter resistance followed by clockwise rotation through four circles to achieve correct positioning where the rotor window should be at 4 o'clock and both arrows must align at 6 o'clock. Install the steering wheel only when the road wheels are set to straight-ahead to prevent damaging the Clock Spring assembly. After new Clock Spring replacement complete the procedure by removing the anti-rotation key and placing the driver air bag module and powering up the SRS system.
