2009 Ford F-150 Timing Chain Tensioner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain tensioner on 2009 Ford F-150?
A: The maintenance of the timing chain tensioner starts by taking off the engine front cover. Then detach the crankshaft sensor ring from the crankshaft while properly positioning the crankshaft keyway at 12 o'clock to have the No. 1 cylinder on exhaust stroke. All parts need markers for their original placement to stop Engine damages from occurring. Use a Valve Spring Compressor while removing the three roller followers from the right-hand (RH) cylinder head but prevent valve keepers from coming loose. Also remove the components from the left-hand (LH) cylinder head. The crankshaft needs clockwise rotation to 6 o'clock before bolts can be removed together with the RH and LH timing chain tensioners and their accompanying arms. First detach both timing chains and the crankshaft sprocket along with the timing chain guides. The Camshaft Phaser Locking Tool enables technicians to remove the RH and LH camshaft phaser sprocket assemblies keeping and discarding the bolts. Add to the procedure by removing both the RH and LH cylinder head camshaft front bearing caps while taking care to lift them directly upward to maintain them undamaged. Inspect and clean both bearing caps followed by the removal of Right Hand and Left Hand camshafts. Apply clean engine oil to solitary LH and RH camshafts before installing them into their respective locations. Select the positions for the bearing caps while applying oil to them and torque the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) following a specific installation order. Use the Camshaft Phaser Locking Tool to perform two-stage tightening of the new bolts while the sprockets are installed finger-tight. The crankshaft sprocket receiving its flange toward the front requires placement of its timing mark at the six o'clock position. The LH and RH timing chain tensioners must undergo seal integrity inspection due to which it might sometimes be needed to replace them. Place a plunger in a vises compression while adding a retaining clip before taking it out of the vise. Before installing the timing chain guides apply marks to indications that colored links cannot be seen then tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Place the lower chain ends on the crankshaft sprocket together with the camshaft sprockets while matching their timing marks against colored links. Set the timing chain tensioner arms while tightening their bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) pressure before taking off the retaining clips. You must check that each timing mark is perfectly aligned after which you should mount the crankshaft sensor ring onto the crankshaft. End the camshaft rotation process by positioning the lobes at the base circle and install all roller followers before placing back the engine front cover. Clean engine oil must be used to lubricate the followers prior to installation.
