2009 Ford F-150 Cam Gear Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Cam Gear/Sprocket for LH on 2009 Ford F-150?
A: You should start camshaft gear/sprocket repair by placing these two components at specific points around the crankshaft damper spoke. Remove the LH valve cover. The procedure begins with turning the LH camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt one full turn then removing its bolt and CMP sensor while also disconnecting the CMP sensor electrical connector. The No. 5 cylinder camshaft lobe needs to be positioned on the exhaust stroke before proceeding. You must rotate the keyway clockwise for one revolution until it reaches 12 o'clock. Remove the three designated camshaft roller followers paying attention to their original placement for engine protection. A Valve Spring Compressor should be used for follower removal with proper attention to maintain valve keepers on their place. The crankshaft should start rotation from the clockwise direction to place both the crankshaft damper spoke and timing mark indentation at their 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions respectively. The Timing Chain Locking Tool square should be attached to timing chain and engine block while the assembly procedure takes place. Before taking out the bolt and the camshaft phaser and sprocket assembly write down location marks on both components and the timing chain. The scribe mark should be marked on the new assembly if replacement occurs before inspecting for any damage. Lay the camshaft phaser and sprocket into the timing chain with proper alignment of the scribed marks and tighten the new camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt by fingers before proceeding. You should use the Timing Chain Locking Tool before turning the crankshaft half a counterclockwise revolution to check its proper camshaft placement. The Valve Spring Compressor helps install the three first-removed camshaft roller followers before mounting the CMP sensor along with its bolt. Tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). You must install the CMP electrical connector before performing a two-stage torque procedure on the camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt by tightening it to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) then continuing the process to 90 degrees. The installation of the valve cover must be the final process.
